I chose this quote from “The Rocking-Horse Winner” because as the oldest of six, I am the mother of the group, and my siblings come to me for approbation, just like Paul comes to his mother for attention and recognition to avoid feeling invisible. Paul feels angry by his mother’s lack of acknowledgment in him; alternately, he goes through “repression” (Freud 2212) by betting on horses to make more money for the family and please his mother. Because I have spent so much time taking care of my siblings, I noticed that they tend to get irritated and call my name in demand when I do not show that I am aware of them. Whenever I call my mother to call them out, they disregard their attitude as they do not want to be portrayed as disobedient by my mother. They attempt to get my attention until I look at them and show my recognition; just like Paul tries to get his mother’s attention to avoid feeling invisible, my siblings look for my approval and appreciation in things as small as looking at their drawings.
