“The Yellow Wallpaper” Song

Adam Oh – Trapped In My Mind

“Trapped In My Mind” clearly represents the idea of trying to escape from oneself like the narrator in “The Yellow Wallpaper”. Adam Oh sings “I don’t know the date, been in my mind for days, wish I could get away. You know it isn’t safe for me to be in this headspace”(0:53). Without a doubt, these lyrics correlate to the women trapped in the wallpaper; without knowing it, the narrator is that woman trapped in the wallpaper trying to free herself, and develops the idea that being with her husband, John, is not a safe place. Adam Oh shows, “I can’t escape even if I tried, too little too late to weak and too kind… So I guess I’m not fine, still trapped in my mind”(2:17).  In “The Yellow Wallpaper” we can see how the narrator is compliant, isolated, and cares about her husband, but that same isolation led her to succumb to her illness and retaliate against her husband. The lyrics represent the narrator because she develops the symptoms of someone who is indeed trapped in their mind but is not aware of it.
