Exploratory Essay Reflection

My writing for the “Exploratory Essay” assignment is a literary nonfiction piece because it contains facts from Freud’s Second lecture and story elements from “Eight Bites”. Besides the fact that I needed to complete the assignment for class, depicting the concept of repressed wishful impulse from Freud’s lecture and connecting it to the ideas of eating disorder and body dysmorphic disorder from Eight prompted me to write about this subject. I hoped to describe the connection between Freud’s second lecture and “Eight Bites” and help others gain a better understanding of the concepts in both pieces of writing. My potential audience is Professor Von Uhl, Professor Yankwitt, my classmates, and my family members. Through the grading of the “Exploratory Essay”, my professors were my audience, while through peer review, my classmates and family members were my audiences. Both my audience and I can use my piece of writing to get a better understanding of repressed wishful impulse and the effects on a patient. Through the process of completing the “Exploratory Essay”, I gained comprehension of wishful impulse and repression. Through peer review, I gained insight into improving my essay and a different understanding of the short story “Eight Bites”. Since this piece of writing is a school assignment, I know that part of my audience, my classmates, and I share the goal of completing the writing task as well as assume that our audience knows all pieces of writing used in the essay. Taking into consideration that my family members reviewed my writing as well, I know that they have little-to-no knowledge of the readings used in the “Exploratory Essay”. Despite not sharing knowledge with all of my audience, insight, and different opinions emerged through the peer-review process.
